Edward Pollard

Forest Conservationist

PROFESSIONAL

Since 1992 I have worked on a variety of conservation projects around the world including wetlands in England, mangroves in Tanzania and rainforest in Cameroon, Indonesia, Viet Nam and Cambodia.

I worked for Harvard University around Gunung Palung National Park (Indonesia) for 2 ½ years trying help set up a community forestry system. For 2 years I worked with The Nature Conservancy - Indonesia Program as conservation scientist for the Lore Lindu and Berau programs.  I have completed High Conservation Value Forest assessments in Indonesia and Viet Nam and helped draft the Indonesia, Viet Nam and Sabah HCVF toolkits.  Forest concessions that I have advised have successfully recieved FSC certification.  Since  early 2006 I have been based in Cambodia where I  work for the Wildlife Conservation Society and Technical Advisor to the Seima Biodiversity Conservation Project.

I work principally to promote biodiversity conservation through protected areas management and the sustainable use of natural resources in and around them. I have particular interest and experience in tropical rainforests and believe that protected areas should take into account the needs and aspirations of local communities.  PAs should not totally exclude people who may depend on them, and in many cases may have shaped greatly what has been percieved as 'natural'. Five years in Indonesia led me to realise reluctantly that in many areas timber harvesting has to take place. With the principle of use it or lose it I have worked to promote the conservation aspects of responsible forest management. This however should always be part of an integrated landscape level conservation plan and I have worked on developing tools for the identification of high conservation value forest at a landscape as well as concession level.

I have a Bachelor's degree in biology from the University of Oxford and a Masters in anthropology from University College London. Download my Masters thesis on Bushmeat in the Korup National Park support zone

Protected Areas strategy development and implementation

I can provide advice and guidance for the development and implementation of conservation strategies protected areas and surrounding lands.

I am proficient in the Miradi conservatation planning tool that provides a robust framework for identifying conservation targets, program development and measures of success. Most of my experience has been applying this to tropical forest PAs but the same tools can be used for any environment, terrestrial or marine. On a larger geographical scale I have experience in the identification of areas of conservation importance at a landscape level. I have experience with ecoregional planning and can advise land planners and other agencies on site selection, priority setting and the design of protected areas networks.
